You Want Healthy Hair But What's in That Creamy Shampoo of Yours?

Did you know the average shampoo sitting on the shelves has over 15 chemicals in the creamy mix?

What chemicals are in your creamy shampoo

These chemicals are known to mess with your natural hormone production. So they are referred to as endocrine disruptors.

As we know, the endocrine system consists of the glands and organs that make hormones and release them directly into the blood. They then travel to tissues and organs all over the body. The hormones released by the endocrine system control many important functions in the body, including growth and development, metabolism, and reproduction.

If you look at the ingredients of most shampoos out there you will see a list of chemicals such as ammonium laureth sulfate, cocamide DHA, formaldehyde, sodium lauryl sulfate, parabens and synthetic perfumes. Then there is Dimethicone, a silicon, that will eventually build up causing breakage and build up at the roots. Also alarming is that some shampoos contain heavy metals, also known to cause hair loss!

These chemicals will not create the healthy hair you want because they make your scalp unhealthy and will dry your hair out causing it to break off. These chemicals are absorbed into your body and once absorbed can create havoc in your endocrine system. Other chemicals induce inflammation at the scalp, causing hair loss. Inflammation for the right reason is good, but we know chronic inflammation leads to a whole lot of problems!

So what do you do? To begin with, I encourage you to stop using these chemical-laden shampoos and switch to an alternative. We know health begins on the inside, however, the shampoos are external damage that is being absorbed to the inside. Once you stop using the chemicals and support your body with proper nutrition and support, eventually, the scalp will re-calibrate and behave healthily.

Ways to Support Your Scalp and Hair Growth

  • Diet is a key denominator when it comes to healthy hormones. Eating a diet high in healthy fats, leafy greens, and other plant foods, and a good moderate amount of proteins. Avoid sugars, simple carbs, and oils like canola, corn, or soybean oil.

  • Omega 3s found in fish like salmon and sardines or quality supplements are necessary for health. A lack of Omega 3s can contribute to hair lackluster and hair loss. Here are some great Omega 3s to try!

  • Drink green tea, matcha is great! It is loaded with antioxidants and can disrupt an enzyme involved in converting testosterone to a follicle-killing form, DHT (think male pattern baldness). 2 cups a day would be very good for this.

  • Try supplementing with herbs that help balance hormones. Ashwagandha, Black Cohosh, and Chaste Tree Extract are all some to try. Try these Ashwagandha Gummies!

  • Low iron can contribute to hair loss. If you are experiencing hair loss you may want to test for low iron/ferritin. You can do this with a home lab test or see your medical provider and ask for the test.

  • Your thyroid health plays a large role in your hair health. To support your thyroid be sure to include foods rich in selenium, zinc, and iodine (Brazil nuts, oysters, seaweed). If you're experiencing thinning hair you may want to have your thyroid levels checked. Paloma Health are expert when it comes to thyroid health! Find just about everything you need to know at Paloma Health. You can even get at-home Thyroid Tests without a doctor's visit and save $30. with code PURSUANCE

  • Stress. Stress will affect the health of your hair due to the production of too much cortisol. You need to do all you can to reduce the impact stress can have. Things like taking a walk in nature, yoga, calling a friend you haven't spoken with in a while, writing down all your blessings, deep breathing exercises, meditation, and prayer. Also, the Ashwagandha mentioned above can be helpful when it comes to stress.

  • Detox: You need to detox those chemicals. Our body has several detox pathways for removing these chemicals and metals (breath, pee, poop, sweat), however, if overloaded, your body needs assistance. You can check out detox aids here.

  • And last but not least choose cleaner shampoo, without all the harmful chemicals. There are several available. Avalon Organics has some wonderful shampoos and conditioners. You can find them here!
